Tragic Loss of Andrea Doria Dos Passos: A Transgender Woman’s Life Cut Short

In the quiet predawn hours of April 23, tragedy unfolded on the streets of Miami Beach. Andrea Doria Dos Passos, a 37-year-old transgender woman, met a violent end while seeking refuge outside the Miami City Ballet.

Dos Passos, unhoused, had become a familiar face near the ballet company. But on Tuesday morning, her life took a devastating turn. A ballet worker stumbled upon her lifeless body, mistaking her for sleeping then realized she was wrapped in a blood-soaked blanket. Her face bore lacerations, and two sticks had been thrust up her nose. An examination later revealed a puncture wound in her chest.

Surveillance footage captured Gregory Fitzgerald Gibert, 53, approaching Dos Passos as she slept a couple of hours after midnight the Miami Herald reports. In an inexplicable act of brutality, Gibert allegedly beat her with a metal pipe before discarding it callously in a nearby trash can. The Miami police apprehended Gibert. He now faces charges of second-degree murder and remains incarcerated without bond.

Andrea Doria Dos Passos’ tragic death serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by transgender individuals, especially those who are unhoused and vulnerable. Unfortunately, another Black man has been viewed as an alleged suspect in yet another murder against a Transwoman. Men are the most common suspects in murder cases of transgender women, Business Insider reports. Their expansive database research covering violence against the trans community, reveals the increase in violence against Black Trans women.
